1825-1864. German socialist. He was
imprisoned for his part in the revolution of
1848, during which he met Marx, and in 1863
founded the General Association of German
Workers (later the Social-Democratic Party).
His publications include The Working Man's
Programme 1862 and The Open Letter 1863. He
was killed in a duel arising from a love
affair.
